Region : Coonawarra, South Australia
Excellent producer of high quality wines , James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2006

A distinguished estate with a proud, even if relatively short history. Long renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon, its repertoire has steadily grown, with the emphasis on single varietal wines. The style overall is fruit rather than oak-driven.

The Leconfield vineyard was planted in 1974 and the winery built in 1975 by Sydney Hamilton at the age of 76. Sydney was a 4th generation descendant of Mr. Richard Hamilton, South Australia’s first vigneron ca 1837. In 1974 Syd planted the vineyard of 30 acres to mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and the following year used his considerable engineering skills to build the Leconfield winery. Syd created a legend with his early vintages, the 1978 and 1980 Leconfield Cabernets.

Leconfield Cabernets 1999
93/100 James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2005 (Leconfield Cabernets 2001)
The Leconfield Cabernets have all been superb wines. The inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon, with small proportions of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc into the Cabernet blend by winemaker Ralph Fowler, has made Leconfield Cabernet arguably one of Australia’s great red wines, thus perpetuating the legend of Sydney Hamilton and the pioneering Hamilton winemaking family.
